As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.   ~ John Fitzgerald Kennedy

O Lord that lends me life,
Lend me a heart replete with thankfulness.
~ William Shakespeare

Thanksgiving Day is a jewel, to set in the hearts of honest men; but be careful that you do not take the day, and leave out the gratitude.  ~ E.P. Powell

Thanksgiving Day comes, by statute, once a year; to the honest man it comes as frequently as the heart of gratitude will allow. ~ Edward Sanford Martin

To give thanks in solitude is enough. Thanksgiving has wings and goes where it must go. Your prayer knows much more about it than you do. ~ Victor Hugo

You may have heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. There’s another day you might want to know about: Giving Tuesday. The idea is pretty straightforward. On the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, shoppers take a break from their gift buying and donate what they can to charity. ~ Bill Gates

Thankfulness is the natural impulse to express that feeling. Thanksgiving is the following of that impulse.  ~ Henry Van Dyke

If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, “thank you,” that would suffice.  ~ Meister Eckhart

To speak gratitude is courteous and pleasant, to enact gratitude is generous and noble, but to live gratitude is to touch Heaven. ~ Johannes A. Gartner

A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all the other virtues.  ~ Cicero

Thanksgiving is one of the finest occasions that entire US celebrates irrespective of cast, creed, faith, religion or color of people. It is celebrated on fourth Thursday of November every year. It is also celebrated in Canada but on second Monday of October every year.

History of thanksgiving dates back to November 1623, when Governor William Bradford proclaimed thanksgiving to Almighty God for his innumerous blessings during previous year.

And now after almost four hundred years this day is gradually becoming a day for huge meals, turkey dinners, cranberries, pumpkin pie and lots of fun.

There are many people who feel that real meaning of thanksgiving has been lost somewhere amidst celebrations. However, there are number of people who have been enjoying celebrations and at the same time they feel that celebrations can hand in hand with a heart filled of gratitude and thankfulness.

Expressing thankfulness towards Almighty God should be a constant process. When your heart is filled with attitude of gratitude, thanksgiving cannot remain limited to one particular day of a year because one day is not long enough to thank God for all those blessings and gifts of life He has given you and is continuously giving you every moment of every day. Let thankfulness continuously flow from your heart.

With your attitude of gratitude, thankfulness flows for everyone and everything. Isn’t it our prime responsibility to acknowledge countless blessings and obligations of Almighty God? He is continuously showering His innumerous and all forms of wonderful blessings. These acts of thanksgiving towards Almighty God must be undertaken by each and every one of us, every day and everywhere.

There are countless things available to you to be grateful. Starting from your perfect physical and mental body, you have innumerous material possessions available to you to be thankful.  Next, you have your loving and adoring family, you must be thankful for. There are several people who are helping you directly and additional countless number of people that are helping you indirectly in your day to day affairs.

There are several beautiful natural things available to you in this world. Look at the blue sky, beautiful clouds, lovely moon and countless number of stars in the sky. Enjoy lovely weather and different climatic conditions in different areas of this planet earth. Admire wonderful environment full of vegetation including variety of trees, plants and flowers. Have you ever been to beautiful forests that are full of life? There are hills, mountains, rivers, lakes, oceans etc. to admire their beauty. And also there are countless number of beautiful birds, fishes, animals and various other creatures. Nature has provided us innumerous variety of food items including fruits, vegetables, cereals and several other delicious and nutritious fruits for your good health.  You have so many things to be grateful to the nature and to the Almighty God.

Be thankful for each and every gift of God. Make your thanks giving habit spontaneous and these feelings must come from the bottom of your heart. It shouldn’t be a mere formality to say ‘thank you’. Everyone must practice it regularly and with total honesty.

Attitude of gratitude is rather helpful to the practitioner. The one who gives thanks from the bottom of heart is always benefited. You get several blessings coupled with more happiness, contentment, success and peace. There are several additional benefits of thankfulness including improved relations, increased emotional health.

On the contrary ungrateful people have a habit of always complaining to others. Thankless people are self centered and they always think for the benefit of the self. But they always remain unhappy and mentally disturbed. As a result they suffer from several diseases including blood pressure, diabetes and loss of memory etc.

All those religions of this world have suggested their followers to continuously practice thankfulness.

Christianity always favors thankfulness.

Bible says, “Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Psalm 136:6 says, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever.”

In Hindu religious book Bhagwat Gita, God is said to assure in one of its verse,

“ananyascintayanto mam
ye janahparyupasate
(Bhagwat Gita: Chapter IX verse 22)

It means “Sri Krishna said to Arjuna: Those who always worship Me with exclusive devotion, meditating on My transcendental form—to them I give what they lack in life, and I protect what they have.”

In Islam thankfulness has been accorded high priority. Attitude of gratitude is given much importance and emphasis.

In Holy Qu’ran it is said, “And be thankful to Me; and do not be ungrateful”. (2:152)

Whenever you ask a Muslim: how are you? The person automatically replies with one Arabic word: “Alhamdulillah.”  It says, “Praise be to God”.

For followers of Islam, it is one of the foremost important duties to be grateful to the Almighty God for all of His blessings.

There are three different levels of thankfulness. i.e.

  1. To realize and appreciate all blessings by and within the heart.
  2. To say thanks with the tongue.
  3. To express gratitude by doing righteous deeds.

God said to Moses: “Be among the thankful” (Surah 7, Ayat 144).

And he promised to the people, If you are thankful, I will grant you increase”.  (Ibrahim 14:7).

Various other religions of the world also promote attitude of gratitude among their followers. These are Buddhism, Confucianism, Jainism, Judaism, Shintoism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism and many more. Essence of almost every religion is gratefulness.

Thus you will see that thankfulness is a blessed attitude expressed towards others and is common in all religions of this world. It is an expression of love and appreciation of others.

Thankfulness is not bound to time, place or religion. Everyone says thank you in any language wherever he is and at any given time.

So let’s be thankful to God for, whatever, we have received in our life from Him. Let us learn to appreciate what we have in life.

It is therefore imperative to make a habit of thankfulness a way of life. Let your heart be filled with gratefulness and its fountain continuously flows from your heart and your mouth. Your tongue must always recite to the tune of thankfulness and appreciation.

In order to remain thankful you must practice following.

1.      Count your blessings:

Count your blessings and be thankful to Almighty God for each and every gift. These are mentioned above. You must also be thankful to all those people who have ever helped you directly and indirectly.

2.      Maintain a gratitude journal:

Everyday record in a journal about gifts and blessings bestowed on you by Almighty God, in your life. In addition, also thank each and every individual who is helping you in your daily affairs. Every night before retiring, write names of minimum ten persons who have helped you directly during this day. Send message of thanks to minimum two persons every day for their help.

3.      Recite thanksgiving prayers:

Every day you must recite prayers of thanksgiving while praising Almighty God for helping you in various activities.

Thus you can make thanksgiving a purposeful and more relevant occasion. Make full use of your habit of thankfulness and gratitude.

Hope you will add flavor of gratitude in your behavior and reap its various benefits. And you will not restrict you to only one designated day of thankfulness. It will flow from your heart effortlessly.

I am thankful to you from the bottom of my heart for reading my articles and giving me strength to write.

Wishing you happiness in all that you do.

Care and Share:

Caring and sharing is a habit that is need of the modern times. Financial and social economics of this world is changing at a fast pace. Sharing has several economic, social and behavioral benefits. Sharing is one of the most effective tool for promoting selflessness, co-operation, trust, understanding and interaction between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’.  Caring for others leads you to a sense of belonging. It helps establishing a bond of love.

Sharing in form of charity and donations has been the essence of every religion.

Buddhists consider charity to be of paramount importance. For them out of six tenets, ‘perfection of giving’ stands at top position.

Christianity also gives equal importance to charity. Christ was living example of kindness, generosity and sharing. He taught all Christians to share as much as they can.

In Hinduism, donation to the needy and underprivileged has been accorded high priority. It is also suggested that Hindus shouldn’t develop any sign of ego while donating. It is suggested to them that your left hand shouldn’t know, what your right hand has contributed.

Islam promotes a sense of brotherhood among people. And it has been specifically told to the followers of Islam that through Zakat, it is mandatory for every Muslim to contribute money and other things for the welfare of underprivileged and poor people.

For them there is one more form of charity, i.e. Sadaqa. In this form one can voluntarily give to others at his free will. In addition to Zakat, Muslims contribute through this form freely and with much more enthusiasm.

Jainism stands for selflessness and compassion. For them Supreme Renunciation is of prime importance. Thus they believe more in giving than taking. They are advised to practice four types of help/donations. These are

  1. Donation of food.
  2. Providing protection to the poor and develop a sense of fearlessness among them.
  3. Providing medical help and medicines to the diseased persons.
  4. Giving books and providing education to the students who cannot afford.

Jews are the most generous people living on this planet earth. They are the largest donors also. Judaism suggests to its followers charity in form of Sadaqah to the unknown people. As a result, every Jew regularly contributes minimum ten percent of their income. But normally it is given much more than ten percent by most Jews.

Guru Nanak was the first Guru who promoted Sikhism. He was a living example of charity and help. As a result, all Sikhs feel their prime responsibility in sharing their wealth with underprivileged persons.  They regularly provide food to everyone who comes to them. They also provide shelter to the needy persons. Sikhs always remain humble while serving others in any form.

In Zoroastrianism, charity is taught from childhood in the form of a prayer. It is said that for acknowledging kingdom of supreme God, you must provide assistance to the poor. Charity is in their blood. They are highly charitable in nature.

Thus it should be mandatory for everyone to share with others. Share everything and anything you can. Share your money, food, belongings, knowledge and time.  Help those they are in need. Develop kindness, humbleness and generosity while sharing.

Every one of us must be trained from childhood to share everything available with us.

To enhance habit of sharing repeat following affirmation several times a day,

“I lovingly and freely share all that I have, including my wealth, happiness and love, with others. By sharing I am receiving more and more.”

Love everyone:

Emotion of love is the strongest of all in human behavior. Life without love cannot exist. Love makes you happy. Love makes you content and love makes you healthy as well.

Every religion of this world promotes love and affection among its followers.

Love shouldn’t be misinterpreted with physical attraction of two individuals of opposite sex.  True love doesn’t distinguish between people of different castes, creed, sex, color, language, religious beliefs, regions or nationality etc.

Learn to love everyone you come across in your life. Make sure that your love is unconditional and selfless.

In addition to mankind, love animals, love plants, love nature and natural resources.

Love everyone and everything.

Following affirmation helps promoting love among people.

“I radiate pure, unconditional and selfless love and I get the same in multiple forms.”

Keep smiling and spreading happiness:

Happiness is a matter of choice. It is our attitude that is decisive factor in making us happy. Hence, we must strive to create such an attitude that is conducive in making us a happy and content person.

Happiness has nothing to do with material objects. It comes with feeling of inner peace and satisfaction. Therefore we must ensure to maintain inner peace in various circumstances of life.

Smiling and happiness go hand in hand. Keep smiling to enhance level of your happiness. Smile is very simple but has great effect. Someone has rightly said, “Frown and you frown alone, but smile and the whole world smiles with you.”

Smile improves your appearance. Smile brings you closure to good health, more wealth, happiness, success, peace and helps winning friends.

Smile and happiness are contagious. When you are happy and are smiling, it changes mood of others present around you and makes them happy. A smiling person brings happiness in the atmosphere.

Smiling has therapeutic benefits as well. It releases highly beneficial hormones namely endorphins and serotonin in the brain. These are natural drugs. Smiling at a greater degree turns to laughter. Someone has rightly said, “Laughter is the best medicine.” So keep smiling and laughing and maintain happiness.

Repeat following affirmation for your happiness,

“My happiness and contentment brings me more and more happiness and contentment for now and always.”

These are five suggestions I have received from Guru for practicing and promoting in this world. And these are suggested in all religions of this world and therefore could be practiced by one and all, without any reservation.

I dedicate this article to my late father, Shri H.G.Nagpal, who was living and vibrant example of all above principles. And today is his death anniversary. I have inherited these qualities and now want to practice what learnt from my father.

Keep giving your valuable suggestions.

Gift of Guru Purnima

12. July, 2014Positivism and Peaceful WorldNo comments

Dinesh K. Nagpal

Part 1 of 2

Dear friends,

I have been away from this blog for more than a year. During this period most of my time has been used in search of positivism.  Now I am back and hope to continue writing for this blog.

Today, Hindu’s all over the world are celebrating Guru Purnima. This day is celebrated on a full moon day at the end of summer month of Ashadh. It normally falls in July every year.

This day is devoted to thank Guru, the teacher.

Guru Purnima is significant because Hindu’s learn the essence of life from their teachers and also pay due respect to them.

Nature has given human beings capacity to evolve beyond all limitations provided he is willing to strive. And Guru is one who helps you lead to the path of enlightenment. This day has special significance as it greatly helps opening of possibilities for human beings to evolve consciously.

Because Hindu’s have a tradition of giving paramount importance to their spiritual as well as academic teachers, they equate guru  with the God and are consider him as a link between a person and the Almighty.

I consider Almighty God as my Guru and my mentor. Right from this morning I was seeking His blessing and was looking forward for His help learning the art of promoting positivism and establishing happiness and peace in this world for which I have been striving hard and working for several years.  Today almost at the end of the day, He sent me Cosmic Vision. In a flash He filled my mind with instructions. It seems on this auspicious day, I got this knowledge from the Adi Guru, the very first Guru of this world.

And thus the ‘Art of Positive Consciousness’ is evolved today.

To begin with He has given me a five point program to be established in this world. This is for bringing happiness and peace in lives of people at large.

Following instructions are received by me. These must be practiced by every person living on this planet.

  1. Be Grateful.
  2. Practice Forgiveness.
  3. Practice Caring and Sharing.
  4. Love everyone.
  5. Keep Smiling and spreading Happiness.

Gratefulness has been considered as a master key that has capability to open your door of good health, more wealth, happiness, success, peace and several other positive circumstances in your life.

All religions of this world including Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Sikhism and Zoroastrianism etc. have strongly advocated gratefulness for their followers.

It is suggested to be thankful to everyone and everything that has made a positive difference in your life, directly and indirectly.

Be thankful to the Almighty God, Super power, nature or whom you believe in. Be thankful that you are living here in this world and are in good condition. Be thankful for your physical and mental health, good family, education and skills, job and financial security, decent life, your assets, your belongings and for many gifts of life. Be thankful that you are leading far better life as compared to billions others living on this planet.

Be thankful to your parents and other family members, your relatives, friends, colleagues. Extend your thankfulness to your employer, customers, vendors, coworkers and all those they are helping you for your livelihood.

Be grateful to each and everyone who is making your life comfortable and helping you. They can be a driver, servant, attendant, maid, nanny, domestic helps etc.  You should learn to be thankful to the ones, who are supplying you grocery, food items and household goods, electricity, water, gas, telephony, mobile services, internet providers, media and many more.

Be thankful to the governments at various levels, various government and non government agencies, police, armed forces and several others who are working day in and day out for your welfare and comfort.

You must also be grateful for countless number of people who are serving you, directly and indirectly. They include farmers, producers, transporters, agents and many more spread all over the world. Governments and people of various countries also deserve your thankfulness.

In fact, you must develop a habit of exhibiting gratefulness to entire mankind, to your pets, to animals that are providing you milk and other products. Be thankful to all those animals which are sacrificing their lives and providing you food and subsequently health.

You can also add to your list, the Sun, the Moon, the Earth, Nature, plants for giving you life.

In addition, you must also learn to be thankful for various negative situations in your life including difficulties, problems, financial constrains, failure in life, ill health and to those they have betrayed you and troubled you. These situations help you in life in various ways.

The list is endless. You can explore many more avenues of thankfulness.

Every moment of your life should be filled with gratefulness.

You can repeat following affirmation for exhibiting your gratefulness. Repeat the same as many time as it is convenient.

“From the deep of my heart and soul, I am grateful to everyone and everything for making my life beautiful.”

Like gratefulness, habit of forgiveness has been at the core of all those religions of this world. Forgiveness is considered one of the most courageous acts of human nature.

There are different aspects of forgiveness.

1.       Forgive the self for all your negative and detrimental actions against mankind, animal and plant kingdoms and against nature. But, you must promise yourself for never ever repeating such acts in your life again that disturbs harmony of this universe.

2.       Forgiving all others for their misdeeds and negative actions against you and forget those acts forever.

3.       Seek forgiveness from everyone else by accepting your past mistakes and misdeeds and look for atonement.  And at the same time promise the self for never repeating those misdeeds again in your lifetime. Also seek forgiveness from the God, Super power, nature and all those unseen powers who are making your life possible.

From the moment of following this principle of forgiveness, start practicing purity of thoughts.

Forgiveness is one of the finest gifts; you are giving to you and to this world. Keep on adhering to this system and never deviate from this path.

Repeat following affirmation five times a day for promoting habit of forgiveness.

“I lovingly forgive and forget the self and everyone else who has ever offended, hurt me or worked against my interest. I also seek forgiveness from everyone and everything for all my misdeeds. I promise not to repeat again my negative actions.”

New Year Resolution for everyone

31. December, 2012Positivism and Peaceful WorldNo comments

 Dinesh K Nagpal

Tragic incidence:

December 16, 2012 was one of the most black days in the history of India, when six hoodlums and drunkards had gang raped and brutally assaulted an innocent girl, in a running bus on the roads of Indian capital. She was fallen victim to the brutal and beastly behavior of men, who have been treating women as a body and an object of sex. In spite of providing best possible treatment in New Delhi and Singapore, her life couldn’t be saved and she succumbed to her injuries and failure of organs, on December 29, 2012.

We are ashamed:

Heads of us, the male fraternity of this country is hanging in shame to you, the brave heart girl for that we could neither save your chastity nor your life. Entire nation is ashamed and also condemns this incidence. We pray Almighty God that your soul may rest in peace.

Youth of this country have united together and almost everyone is demanding death sentence to all those culprits. Now a question is agitating my mind for almost ten days, will hanging six culprits stop this menace from the face of earth? Changing law to award death sentence to rapists may act as a deterrent to some but this may not end the perennial problem being faced by women from ages. This awakening of youth of India shouldn’t go waste! Let all of us come forward and ensure safety of womenfolk not only in India but all over the world.

What should be done?

Now the big question is how to make it possible? Let us do it in a different way.

Every individual living on this earth should take responsibility. Let every one of us must firmly accept our mistakes and shortcomings. We all male members of society are also responsible to some extent in creating this atmosphere of fear and lawlessness. Death of this innocent girl should help saving millions of women who are oppressed, raped, tortured, harassed, brutalized, assaulted, trafficked, burned alive and killed.

Let us bring radical changes in our thoughts and help establishing positivism in this world. To begin with, we must resolve to end this trend now. Our New Year resolution must be for establishing an atmosphere of safety and security for females of this world. And we should adhere to follow this resolution with total honesty and sincerity.

Here are few examples of resolutions for everyone that promote feelings of universal brotherhood among all.

All male persons including youth:

“I resolve to respect every female member of the society as my mother, sister or daughter, depending on her age. I will speak to every one of them with respect and will never ever tease her and will never pass any lewd remark. I will not make any effort to physically assault her. I will make all possible effort to protect womenfolk from unscrupulous persons having mala fide intentions. In 2013, I will raise bar of my positive thoughts towards society and make efforts that this world becomes one of the most beautiful places to live, for every one”

All parents and grand parents:

“I resolve to train my male children and grand children learn to respect female members of society as their mothers or sisters, according to their age. They will be trained in such a way that they speak to every female with respect and will never ever tease them and will never pass any lewd remark. They will also be trained that they never make effort to physically assault female members of society and they will make all possible efforts to protect womenfolk from negative persons having mala fide intentions. In 2013, I will make efforts that the bar of my children’s positive thoughts towards society is raised to an extent that they make this world one of the most beautiful places to live, for every one.”

All females:

“I resolve to learn to protect the self from negative elements of society by learning self defense techniques. I also resolve not to provoke any male members of society by my gestures and my behavior, for an assault. In case they are misbehaving or showing any other negative sign, I must take help of the persons nearby or police. It would also be my endurance to help establishing atmosphere of love, peace and happiness on this earth.”

All teachers:

“I resolve to practice and teach my male students, besides my regular subject, lessons on respecting womenfolk and considering them as mothers or sisters, depending their age. I will also teach them to protect girls from unscrupulous people and their negative behavior.  It would also be my endurance to help establishing atmosphere of love, peace and happiness on this earth.”

All religious and spiritual gurus:

“I resolve to work for spiritual upliftment of all those people who have faith in me and my teachings. I will personally practice abstinence from all sort of negative behavior towards females and will direct my energy in training them and imbibing in them positive traits of giving respect to womenfolk and considering them as mothers, sisters or daughters, depending on their age. It would also be endurance to help establishing atmosphere of love, peace and happiness on this earth.”

All police personnel and member of law enforcing authorities:

“I resolve to practice honesty and respect towards women in my life. I will treat them as my mother, sister or daughter, according to their age and ensure to provide safety and security to womenfolk from unscrupulous elements of society. I will ensure that culprits are appropriately punished and they started abhorring crime. It would also be my endeavor to establish peace, happiness and law of the land.”

All persons belonging to judiciary:

“I resolve to practice honesty and respect towards women in my life. I will treat them as my mother, sister or daughter, according to their age. Within my powers I will ensure that womenfolk remain safe and secure from unscrupulous people living in society. It would also be my endurance that culprits and criminals are punished appropriately and are unable to repeat any crime of molesting and assaulting women. It would also be my endurance to establish peace and happiness on this earth.”

All politicians and law makers:

“I resolve to dedicate my life for practicing honesty in my life and ensure safety and security of the people whom I represent. I will treat womenfolk as my mother, sister or daughter, depending on her age. I also resolve to help creating an atmosphere of fearless living for the womenfolk and I will use my powers in building such laws that help their respectful living in society. It would also be my endurance to help establishing peace, happiness on this earth.”

Me, Dinesh K Nagpal:

“I resolve to undertake that I will respect and honor all womenfolk of this world either as my mother, sister or a daughter, depending on her age. I will speak to every one of them with due respect and promise never to assault them. It would be my endeavor to protect them to the best of my abilities from all those negative people and circumstances. I am continuously practicing positivism in my life and spreading the same in society through my blog, www.letusbepositive.com and will continue to do the same with my workshops and lectures.”

“I further resolve to contribute substantial amount of money generated from this blog and workshops for welfare of underprivileged female children. It would be my endeavor to help establishing kingdom of God on this planet through my principle of Good Mastermind.

These are some examples of resolutions. In case, conditions and problems in your surroundings are different, you can frame your resolution accordingly. No matter what you are and where you live, your purpose must be establishing fearless surrounding for people of this world and help creating an atmosphere of love, happiness, co-operation, compassion, peaceful living and forgiveness.

I pray Almighty God for helping people of this world establish positivism and love for all.

Wishing very happy New Year 2013 for everyone living on this beautiful planet earth.

Keep reading and giving your valuable comments.

How to attain peace of mind (Part 2)

26. September, 2012Positivism and Peaceful WorldNo comments

Dinesh K Nagpal

Part 2 of 2

Here are some tested and highly recommended techniques for attaining peace of mind.

1.     Change yourself: It is rightly said, if you wish to change the world, change yourself. This world will be changed. It is easy to bring changes in habits of the self rather than changing others. So to live peacefully, you must start change from the self. This change must involve two aspects,

a.     Drive away negative thoughts from your being and get rid of your negative habits. Every human being has one or more negative habits, which are considered detrimental for his happiness and peace. These habits are anger, rage, hatred, jealously, resentment, ego, false pride, impatience, criticizing others, finding faults in others, arguments, selfish behavior etc.

b.  You will find people justifying such habits but outcome of these habits is always negative for your physical, mental, spiritual and social health. Try to recognize them and make efforts for getting rid of these habits to save your life. I have given a prescription for a peaceful world in one of my articles on Good mastermind. It is available in the form of e book also. You can download the same.

Once your mind is devoid of negative thoughts, you need to simultaneously fill it with positive thoughts. Love is one of the most potent positive thought. Thoughts of love coupled with compassion, tolerance, kindness, gentleness, courtesy, humility, humbleness, gratitude, appreciation and forgiveness etc. will establish happiness and peace in your life.

2.     Avoid being idle: An idle mind is devil’s workshop. Some people have habit of wasting too much of their time in idling with no work at all. Some watch TV programs in excess, some talk too much over phone and involve in gossip. There are people who use internet too much. Visiting social media websites in excess is passion for several people.  Some involve them in anti-social activities. A religious fanatic is also an outcome of idle mind. It robs a person of peace of mind and happiness.

In case you have plenty of time available with you, involve yourself in constructive activities. You can practice yoga, physical exercising, deep breathing exercise, meditation, mental chanting etc. In quiet moments, keep busy in reading books that help you improving your life. Develop a hobby such as writing, painting, music, sculpture and there are several hobbies you can involve yourself. Learn to make full use of your time.

3.     Practice minimalism: This world is full of materials. For comfort and ease of humankind everyday several new products are added to the existing list of millions consumer products. Almost everyone is anxious to grab as much as possible. In this rat race man is losing his peace. You acquire a latest model of a cell phone or a car and you feel happy and show your supremacy over others. But within short span of time, a new advanced version of cell phone or a car is launched and your happiness and supremacy is gone as now you don’t own latest models.

The best way to come out of this situation is to reduce your wants and practicing minimalism. The most amazing aspect of minimalism is that you are able to realize the fact that abundance lies in consuming less. It helps keeping your clutter under control. Fewer are your wants and possessions; the greater is your peace of mind.

4.     Help others: Basically human being is a social animal and in society everyone co-operates one another and they grow together. But with increasing materialism and tendency of individuality, this society is gradually turning to be more selfish. Habits to help others seem to be decreasing at a faster pace. By practicing selflessness and helping others you can attain peace of mind. There is countless number of ways to help others. You can smile at someone, help bringing grocery to elderly and aged neighbors and feed a hungry person, purchase books and clothing for a child from a poor family. You can make a donation for a noble cause and donate that you are not using. You can teach someone, share your time, money or material. You can do some community service. Always remember not to take credit for the help, and co-operation rendered by you. Your left hand shouldn’t know what your right hand has given to help others.

5.     Accept what you cannot change: All those activities of this world are said to be governed by a cosmic plan. We all are active participants of this great plan. Most of the time things do not go as per our wishes and the way we think and do. We are unable to change what is going on. We must learn to accept the will of God. We fail to understand this cosmic plan and think that circumstances are not in my favor. There are possibilities that these so called adverse circumstances could be in our favor. I often repeat this prayer in such circumstances. It says, “O my God, give me strength to change what I ought to change, give me courage to accept, what I cannot change and give me serenity to accept the difference.”

6.     Learn to discriminate right path: On crossroads of life, you find two paths. One is pleasant and convenient path and the other is good path. You will find most people prefer to follow pleasant path. You may also wish to tread on the same path. You mind tempts you to imitate others and follow the ways of the world. It is a general tendency to imitate others. But you must learn to discriminate what is right and what is not. Just because everyone is taking pleasant path, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you must also follow the same. Listen to your inner voice and act accordingly. Strive hard to tread on right path. This path will ultimately lead you to peace of mind.

7.     Don’t compare yourself with others: Every person in this world has his own identity. Nature has created everyone equal with same characteristics. It is this world which creates differences on the basis of caste, creed, color of skin, gender, religion, nationality and several other factors. They compare one another based on riches, education, position held, material possessions and so on.  This comparison is the root cause of discontentment and unrest. On material plane, if you compare yourself with rich and affluent people and those they are more fortunate than you, you are bound to lose peace of your mind.  Be true to yourself. Try to establish coordination between your thoughts, words and actions. Altogether stop comparing you with others. Respect your identity and equally give regards to others individuality and identity.

8.     Do not downgrade others and interfere in their affairs: Sometimes out of our ego and our high headedness we try to impose ourselves superior to others and we hurt others feelings. We downgrade, ill treat or abuse them. At time, we hate others for none of their faults. It is rightly said, “As you sow, so shall you reap.” In case you are disturbing peace of others, you will have to reap the same by losing your peace of mind. Speak to others with a purpose and in measured words. Do not allow yourself to speak unnecessarily and poke your nose in others affairs.

9.     Take good care of yourself: To live peacefully, you must always remain physically and mentally healthy. Live balanced life. For maintaining physical health, physical exercise, yoga, breathing exercise, adequate sleep and balanced diet must be integral part of your daily routine. For your mental peace, meditation, positive thinking and spiritual development must be a regular habit. A healthy person can lead a peaceful life.

10.    Visualize: Visualization is a powerful technique. You can make mental pictures of peaceful living, in your mind. You can also perform creative visualization of establishing positivism in your life. In case, you want to improve your financial or physical health, you can draw images in your mind and visualize positive outcome. Make sure to make images in present moments. Your predominant thoughts attract similar circumstances in your life. Practice visualization regularly for fifteen to twenty minutes, twice a day. Go to a quiet room and sit comfortably with straight back and closed eyes. Draw mental images of peace of mind. Gradually, you will learn to find peace in your mind.

11.   Repeat affirmations: Last but not the least, continuous repetition of positive affirmations help you living peacefully. Some affirmations are given hereunder. You can also make your own affirmations.

  • “I let go of all feelings of despair and live in total peace.”
  • “I am calm, serene and have peace of mind.”
  • “God is now filling my mind with peace, with courage and with calm assurance.”
  • “I am calm, calm, calm; restful, peaceful, tranquil.
Pressures come, pressures go; I am calm, calm, calm.”

I wish all my readers a peaceful and purposeful life.
